“At Energy Storage Canada we’re excited to see the IESO’s announcement of more than 700 MW of energy storage projects as the next step in Canada’s largest energy storage procurement to date,” said Justin Rangooni, Executive Director, Energy Storage Canada.
The IESO forecasts electricity demand to increase two per cent annually over the next 20 years. The IESO is offering contracts to seven battery storage facilities located throughout the province, varying in size from 5 MW to 300 MW. These facilities will serve to meet both province-wide and local needs in a number of key locations.
TORONTO – The Ontario government has concluded the largest battery storage procurement in Canada’s history and secured the necessary electricity generation to support the province’s growing population and economy through the end of the decade.
A 2020 report commissioned by Energy Storage Canada, Unlocking Potential: An Economic Valuation of Energy Storage in Ontario, found that 1000 MW of energy storage in Ontario could provide as much as $2.7 billion in savings for Ontario electricity customers.
These projects complement the recent agreement for the 250 MW Oneida Energy Storage Facility and conclude the first of two stages within the procurement. Storage facilities charge up during off-peak hours, taking advantage of Ontario’s clean energy supply mix, and inject energy back into the grid when it is needed most.
Interested bidders must submit a phase one offer before being invited to submit a phase two offer. The deadline for submitting the phase one bid is February 28, 2023, at 5 p.m. EPT. Please refer to the Request for Proposal and its appendices for details. Bidders will be notified of their approval to submit a phase two offer on March 31, 2023.
The European energy storage market is booming with Germany leading residential adoption (+58% YoY) thanks to €500/kWh subsidies. Italy's new tax credits drive 5.2GWh commercial deployments, while UK grid-scale projects exceed 8GWh with 2-hour duration systems. Key selection criteria: German-certified safety (VDE-AR-E 2510), 10+ year warranties, and VPP readiness. Top-performing products include Sonnen's hybrid inverters (98% efficiency) and BYD's Blade Battery (12,000 cycles @80% DoD). For snowy regions like Scandinavia, consider Huawei's -30°C compatible systems. France mandates carbon footprint declarations - Sungrow's ISO-14067 certified solutions gain preference.
For European homeowners, 5-10kWh systems with 3-phase compatibility are ideal. Top picks: 1) Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5kWh, 97% round-trip efficiency) for smart home integration; 2) LG Chem RESU Prime for compact urban installations; 3) SMA Sunny Boy Storage for retrofit projects. Critical features: EU-made battery cells (exempt from CBAM tariffs), dynamic tariff optimization (like Octopus Energy integration), and fire-safe LiFePO4 chemistry. Southern Europe demands 85%+ depth of discharge capability, while Nordic markets require -25°C operation. Always verify CEI 0-21 compliance for Italian grid connection and EnWG certification for German feed-in.
