Pohjoismaiset kantaverkkoyhtiöt ovat päättäneet siirtää uuden mFRR-energiamarkkinan käyttöönottoa vuoden 2025 alkupuolelle. Markkinaa ei oteta käyttöön vielä 3. joulukuuta 2024, sillä uuden automatisoidun tasehallintaprosessin turvallisen toiminnan varmistamiseksi tarvitaan enemmän aikaa Norjan kantaverkkoyhtiössä Statnettissä
mFRR-kapasiteettimarkkina muuttuu – webinaarisarjan seuraava osa 5.9. mFRR-kapasiteettimarkkina siirtyy yhteispohjoismaiselle markkina-alustalle syksyllä 2024. Markkinat yhdistyvät kolmen maan, Suomen, Ruotsin ja Tanskan kesken. Fingrid järjestää webinaarin mFRR-reservitoimittajille torstaina 5.9. kello 10.00 – 11.30. Webinaarin
Since 2016 Fingrid has been procuring mFRR capacity (up-regulation) on a weekly market to maintain enough mFRR balancing bids to cover the dimensioning fault in Finland. Due to changes in the Finnish electricity production palette, the demand for mFRR capacity is rising and due to this, Fingrid is also developing the national mFRR capacity market.
Fingrid has successfully transferred the national mFRR capacity market from the current Vaksi market platform to the new Nordic Fifty NMMS market platform on 12th November. From now on Fifty NMMS will be the primary market platform for mFRR capacity market, with Vaksi remaining as a backup system.

Today, TSOs have national capacity markets for manual frequency restoration reserves (mFRR). mFRR replace aFRR as TSOs restore the frequency back to the normal band (49,9 – 50,1 Hz) or reduce the area control error to zero.

The mFRR capacity market expands. A national mFRR capacity market was introduced in Finland in autumn 2022. The mFFR capacity market will expand to a common market covering Sweden and Denmark in November 2024. In practice, Fingrid will transfer its mFFR capacity market to a Nordic IT platform.
mFRR- ja aFRR-energiamarkkinoiden lisäksi Fingrid raportoi myös muilla reservimarkkinoilla havaitsemiaan poikkeamia. The balancing capacity market of manual Frequency Restoration Reserve (mFRR) is going to change at the end of 2022 from a weekly procurement to an hourly market. Procurement volumes of up-regulation capacity will increase and the procurement of down-regulation capacity will start from the beginning of 2023.

Fingrid has successfully transferred the national mFRR capacity market from the current Vaksi market platform to the new Nordic Fifty NMMS market platform on 12th November. With the capacity acquired from the MFRR capacity market, Fingrid ensures that sufficient frequency restoration reserve is available at any given time to maintain the
Frequency Restoration Reserve from the mFRR energy Market. Fingrid uses the mFRR capacity procured by means of mFRR capacity Agreements and from the mFRR capacity Market to ensure that there is, at all times, a sufficient volume of Frequency Restoration Reserve to maintain the power balance between production
The mFRR (also R3 or tertiary reserve) helps to restore the required grid frequency of 50 Hz (or in some countries of 60 Hz). This tertiary control reserve intervenes when there are longer lasting deviations in the power grid that cannot be resolved solely by the other upstream balancing services (FCR or aFRR).
The companies involved in Fingrid''s wind pilot project built their wind farms in spring 2023 and worked with Fingrid to resolve the technical challenges related to the reserve markets, such as how to carry out the reserve market approval processes, conduct tests, handle disruptions and trade with entities abroad.

Data before 30.11.2022 is test-data. The forecasted amount of upwards balancing capacity procurement [MW/h]. Fingrid procures mFRR capacity through the balancing capacity market, which is held when needed. Balance service provider pledges itself to leave regulating bids on the regulation market.
Fingrid is increasing the procured volume of the Frequency Containment Reserve for Disturbances, Downwards (FCR-D downwards) from 200 MW to 220 MW and the procured volume of the manual Frequency Restoration Reserve (mFRR) down-regulation capacity from 200 MW to 225 MW starting from 1 July.
The balancing capacity market is used to secure that Fingrid has a sufficient amount of Manual Frequency Restoration Reserve to cover the dimensioning fault also during maintenance of Fingrid''s own and leasing reserve power plants.

In addition, a common Nordic market for mFRR capacity is planned. Fingrid procures balancing capacity from the balancing capacity market to ensure that there is enough Frequency Restoration Reserves to maintain the power balance between production and consumption and to ensure the reliability of the transmission network.
Nordic mFRR capacity market under development The Nordic transmission system operators are implementing the joint Nordic mFRR capacity market as part of the Nordic Balancing Model Project. The common market aims to improve the cost-effectiveness of procurement. Cross-border trading of mFRR capacity requires a reserve of transmission capacity.
Fingrid has also proposed to reduce the minimum bid size of the balancing capacity market from five megawatts to one megawatt. The change in the terms and conditions is still awaiting approval from the Energy Authority, and it will be implemented one month after the approval, i.e. already before the renewal of the market design.
Procurement volumes of up-regulation capacity will increase and the procurement of down-regulation capacity will start from the beginning of 2023. In addition, a common Nordic market for mFRR capacity is planned.
Fingrid proposes that the current market for weekly capacity will become the hourly market that is run on previous day's morning. The new procurement model is planned to have go-live by the end of 2022. 1 MW minimum bid size
The EB-GL created a set of technical, operational and market rules which will unify the markets and thus make cross-border exchange of balancing energy possible in the first place. In order to harmonize the European balancing services markets, different platforms are created with MARI being the one for pan-European trading of mFRR.
The European energy storage market is booming with Germany leading residential adoption (+58% YoY) thanks to €500/kWh subsidies. Italy's new tax credits drive 5.2GWh commercial deployments, while UK grid-scale projects exceed 8GWh with 2-hour duration systems. Key selection criteria: German-certified safety (VDE-AR-E 2510), 10+ year warranties, and VPP readiness. Top-performing products include Sonnen's hybrid inverters (98% efficiency) and BYD's Blade Battery (12,000 cycles @80% DoD). For snowy regions like Scandinavia, consider Huawei's -30°C compatible systems. France mandates carbon footprint declarations - Sungrow's ISO-14067 certified solutions gain preference.
For European homeowners, 5-10kWh systems with 3-phase compatibility are ideal. Top picks: 1) Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5kWh, 97% round-trip efficiency) for smart home integration; 2) LG Chem RESU Prime for compact urban installations; 3) SMA Sunny Boy Storage for retrofit projects. Critical features: EU-made battery cells (exempt from CBAM tariffs), dynamic tariff optimization (like Octopus Energy integration), and fire-safe LiFePO4 chemistry. Southern Europe demands 85%+ depth of discharge capability, while Nordic markets require -25°C operation. Always verify CEI 0-21 compliance for Italian grid connection and EnWG certification for German feed-in.
